When you think of lyrical romantic jazz piano playing, the first name that comes to mind, the one who influenced so many others who came later, is Bill Evans. he could certainly swing with the best of them, but it was a master of the melody that he reached so many. Miles Davis thought the world of him -- he included the pianist on his seminal "Kind of Blue" album. (Evans also wrote the liner notes for that album).
"You Must Believe In Spring" was recorded late in Evan's career (1977). It has gorgeous playing and stunning production by Helen Keane (the artist's manager) and Tommy LiPuma.
The trio is one of the last of Bill's great ones -- with Eddie Gomez on bass and Eliot Zigmund on drums. The songs are an ingenious mix of classics by such diverse writers as Johnny Mandel, Jimmy Rowles, Cole Porter and Evans himself. Of particular note is the title tune, which has become a standard for instrumentalists and singers, and Evans's haunting "We Will Meet Again.", ISBN13:B0000C24KC ISBN10:B0000C24KC Material Type:audioCD
