Samuel Mazzuchelli, the son of Milan, would come from Lombardy Italy to Chicago then know as Fort Dearborn. He landed in New York late in the year 1828. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1830. His first assignment sent him to Mackinac Island, off the edge of nothern Michigan. In the years that followed, his mission spread south and west across Wisconsin Territory. The result of his reflections was this book. In it he tried to explain his new coutnry to his old countrymen, to show how the Church acted as a bond between old and new.
