It is a self-administered, 50-item questionnaire designed to measure adverse consequences of alcohol abuse in five domains: Interpersonal, Physical, Social, Impulsive, and Intrapersonal. Each scale provides a lifetime and past 3 months measures of adverse consequences, and scales can be combined to assess total adverse consequences. Normative data are available for interpretation of client scale scores, and a brief version of the DrInC, the 15-item Short Index of Problems (SIP), can be used when assessment time is limited. In clinical settings, the DrInC can be used for treatment planning and evaluation of treatment outcomes. Researchers have used the DrInC in numerous alcohol treatment clinical trials as an outcome measure. Baseline and follow-up versions of the DrInC are available, and assessment timeframes can be easily modified to meet research needs. The DrInC is a reliable, valid, and clinically useful measure of adverse consequences of drinking.
