Though laden with its share of period kitsch both in song selection and packaging, Suddenly '70s is an almost always listenable collection of some of that decade's biggest AM hits. Individual listeners may reasonably disagree--even violently argue--when it comes to the merits of "Afternoon Delight" or "Billy Don't Be a Hero." But when enduringly meaty singles like the Raspberries' "Go All the Way," Stories' cover of Hot Chocolate's "Brother Louie," and the Hues Corporation's "Rock the Boat" blast out of the speakers, they hold their own with counterparts from the previous decade. Sometimes goofily sincere (John Travolta's pre-Saturday Night Fever ballad "Let Her In"), sometimes sincerely hopeful (Helen Reddy's ode to middle-class feminism, "I Am Woman"), the more lightweight moments here undeniably evoke their confusing cultural era. However cloaked in memories of bad fashion choices, though, most of these tracks stand on their own various musical strengths. --Rickey Wright
