Herbert von Karajan was on the record as saying that he did not believe Schubert's Ninth to be great music, which means that he only recorded it two or three times! Actually, his performance of this (and the "Unfinished") is a pretty good one, sincere and unaffected, with some excellent playing. These EMI recordings are preferable to the ones on DG, as they have more presence and a much more natural balance.
