This chronology works well, though following a time line backward and then forward may cause confusion. There are jumps to present-day scientific expeditions ranging over relevant landscapes or examining the fossil record. The articulate scientists featured highlight the slow development of the earth, ocean, and atmosphere into a shifting biosphere. "A Global Warning?" outlines our present quandary over global warming. Scientists warn this round of climate change, caused by rapid burning of Earth's fossil fuel reserves, may advance beyond human control. "Life After People" enlists engineers to predict the fate of our infrastructure without human beings. Repetitive computer animations illustrate the concept, but a visit to Prypiat, a ghost town near Chernobyl, is more evocative. Each disc includes bonus materials. VERDICT This anthology offers a truly planetary perspective, as revealed by scientific investigation and monitoring.
