Pianist Jim Brickman is an artist who seems to have discovered a permanent opening to his own deep well of emotional cognizance. Since the release of this debut recording in 1994, he has repeatedly tapped into that well to deliver some of the most satisfying piano-based recordings of the 1990s. No Words is purely solo piano, and as such it conveys a slightly more formal tone than his subsequent albums, which progressively reveal a more overtly romantic, pop-inclined sense of melody and structure. Well-suited for reading, daydreaming, and introspection, No Words is a quiet, worthwhile recording comparable to George Winston's better works, highlighted by such tracks as the wistful "I Said...You Said" and the wealth of mental images spawned by "American Dream." --Terry Wood
