Long overshadowed by Jerry Gonzalez and his Fort Apache Band, percussionist and bandleader Bobby Sanabria has been one of the hardest-working Latin jazz musicians in New York. This recording, captured live at Birdland in 1999, is the long-awaited follow-up to his first CD, New York City Ache! and features his big-band riffing and grooving in the style of Machito, Dizzy Gillespie, and Tito Puente. Trumpeter Phillip Michael Mossman's bop-born burner, "Mosscode," is a swinging shout-out to Gillespie's "Shaw 'Nuff," and the standard "Angel Eyes" is recast as a ballroom bolero. Tenor and soprano saxists Jay Collins and John Stubblefield both recall Rahsaan Roland Kirk and take the Coltrane on the son montuno "Nuyorican Son" and on "Olokun/Yemanja," a 5/4 mambo in praise of African deities. Legendary conguero Candido Camero shows up as a special guest, lending his complex cross-rhythms to the fiery update of '40s Afro- Cubop staple "Manteca." With one hand in Havana and another in Harlem, Bobby Sanabria scores big here. --Eugene Holley Jr., ISBN13:B00004TKEL ISBN10:B00004TKEL Material Type:audioCD
