Linked to a Cause: A Personal History of Eastern Nazarene College

[From the Author's Preface] "Linked to a Cause" is not intended to be either a history or an autobiography. I do not have the patience to write a definitive history, and outside of my intimate relationship with ENC, I have no personal story worth writing. The material is, of course, historically correct, and since I participated in or observed the events I describe, it is to that extent autobiographical. This volume concerns itself particularly with an inside view of ENC from the mid-20s, through some exciting years of growth and development, to the year 1970. No attempt has been made to relate all the incidents which occurred during these years, nor is it possible to list all the people who were associated with ENC while I was there. I have written about those whom I knew best and who were involved in the events I narrate. Most of the chapters cover the same span of years, but for different reasons. For example, chapter 2, "A Personal Pilgrimage," outlines the various tasks I was asked to perform from 1929 to 1970. In chapter 3, "Adventure in Academia," I have traced the academic growth of the college during those same years. I have relied largely on my own memory but have made frequent use of the files of "The Christian Scholar," the "Campus Camera," presidents' reports, trustee minutes, and other materials that have been preserved in the archives. In the process of writing this book I have had the nostalgic experience of reliving most of my life. It has not been a burdensome task, for I believe the story of ENC needs to be related.
