"I'm a wordless storyteller, someone who cares about the dynamics of music because musical dynamics are human dynamics. I've tried every context imaginable, but the trio is the most demanding. The trio allows me a lot of space. Playing at optimum level is the challenge. What's necessary for me is establishing a meaningful statement musically, the value lies in my skill to interpret a song. We are in the midst of a very prolific period and this release has me thinking about the next one. I'm excited about what we recorded here, as well as what's waiting to be recorded. It's still always exciting for me to sit down at the piano, and every time I do, something new happens, something surprises me, or I surprise myself. The wonderful thing about music is that it's ageless."

About the Artist

Born in Pittsburgh in 1930, Jamal began playing piano at the age of 3, and professionally at 11. Forming his own trio, Three Strings, in 1951, the group became known as the Ahmad Jamal Trio in the early '50s. He achieved major prominence in 1958 with "Live at the Pershing," which remained a top 10 album for over two years! He has recorded for Argo/Cadet, Epic, Impulse!, Atlantic, and Telarc, among others.
