He was often called "America's Beloved Gospel Singer." Since 1943, he has carried the Gospel in song across America and to every continent as part of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. He was the recipient of ten Grammy nominations nominations and one Grammy Award (1965), and was a member of the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame (1978).
