The ultra-violent sci-fi adventure Deadman Wonderland (2011) is based on a manga by Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou. Fourteen-year-old Ganta Igarashi is a normal middle school student, until a mysterious figure he dubs "the Red Man" slaughters everyone else in his class. After being framed as the murderer, Ganta is sent to Deadman Wonderland, a combination prison, amusement park, and gladiatorial arena. Inside the prison, Ganta discovers he can now fight with "branches of sin," weapons made of his own blood. Like countless other underdog anime heroes, he wins the friendship of the people around him through his determination and loyalty. The wild card in the bloodstained deck is Shiro, an infantile albino girl who takes out guards and anyone else in her way, while nattering childishly about sweets. Deadman Wonderland plays like a gory mash-up of Gurren Lagann and Hellsing Ultimate. The minimal storyline exists only to string the battles together. Deadman Wonderland is supposed to be a maximum-security lockdown facility, yet Ganta, Shiro, and their friends wander throughout the prison at will. With episode 12, the story simply stops, with key points left unresolved; the OAV "The Red Knife Wielder" is a sort of prequel, focusing on Ganta's ally Senji. The violence is graphic, nonstop--and pointless, with gobbets of CG blood splashing across the screen. Spreading this material over three discs in two plastic boxes with a cardboard case feels like overpackaging. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence; violence against women, children, and animals; grotesque imagery; brief nudity; sadism; torture; extensive profanity; sexual situations; alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
