The additional features on the Brokeback Mountain Collector's Edition are much like the film itself--understated, intelligent, and thought-provoking, and all unfold at a leisurely pace. There's nothing extremely in-depth here, but it provides a nice background for a movie that took on a life of its own during its high-profile release. Most interesting is the "A Groundbreaking Success" feature that tracks the movie's cultural impact from low-profile art film to controversial, Oscar-winning blockbuster; it's the only feature that reaches out to people who didn't work on the film. Also worth a look are "Music from the Mountain," which explores Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolla's creation of the spare, guitar-oriented score, and "From Script to Screen: Interviews with Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana," in which Brokeback's screenwriters explore the themes of the film and its metamorphosis from New Yorker short story to two-hour film. Most of the features in which the actors appear can be given a cursory look--they all obviously had a great experience making the movie and all adore director Ang Lee, which while happy is not incredibly revealing, though star Heath Ledger's contributions are by far the most measured and intelligent. However, definitely avoid the jarringly superficial behind-the-scenes special created for the Logo network. In some ways, it's still too soon for an in-depth exploration of the movie's impact, and hopefully within the next five to ten years someone will assess how Brokeback changed the cinematic landscape, but for now these extras provide helpful insight into the film. --Mark Englehart, ISBN13:B000JSI7AI ISBN10:B000JSI7AI Material Type:dvd
